When we think about creativity, we often connect it with artists — people who paint, write poetry, or are just “naturally creative souls.” But the truth is: creative thinking has much less to do with art and much more to do with how we approach life. Why do we reflect on artists? Because they show us what it looks like to have an open mind and to see things differently — or from another perspective.
How many times have you been in a situation where you open your fridge, find some leftovers, and try to make something delicious for dinner? Your impulse is to use what you have and combine it into a new, tasty meal. That’s creative thinking in its simplest form: using what you have in new ways.
The same thing happens at work. But many of us aren’t taught to be creative there. We learn to follow strict rules, think “the right way,” and avoid anything unexpected. Over time, work becomes boring. We repeat the same tasks, complain about established processes, and get stuck in routines. After years like this, we become exhausted, demotivated, and our daily life turns into just waiting for retirement while counting the years until it happens.
Luckily, not all of us are like that 😀
Why did I say “us”? I was in the same situation — at work I followed strict rules, tried not to “rock the boat,” and avoided attention. I was miserable. And, what did I do? I changed job… and then changed again… and again. It was my way of thinking. It took me more than five years to realize: it wasn’t the job, it was me.
Then I attended a workshop that taught me how to practice creativity — which, at that point in time, I didn’t even know could be practiced. Then I started reading more and more about creative thinking, and it amazed me what we can do when we shift our perspective.
For me, creative thinking is really about asking: What if I do this another way? What if I connect two random things that don’t seem connected at all? This way of thinking can turn a problem into a discovery or frustration into innovation.
Wondering why children are more creative than adults? They don’t have the barriers we’ve built over time. If you open your mind, think like a child, and “switch on” your imagination, results can be incredible — it will show you what you can achieve for yourself, your life, and your family.
We, as humans, are creative creatures — one of the key characteristics that differentiates us from AI — and we should use it to our advantage. How? Train your creativity. 😀
